Snowball Crit #1 February 20, 2011

The racing season is underway. In Virginia the season has started with the Snowball training series for the past 14 years. Although this is a training race, riders don't treat it like that. Nerves are high and anticipation is great. Sometimes it could set the tone for the season. It is a great place to gain some confidence for the year, but it is also a place you could lose all you worked for. A high place or an aggressive showing with validate your winter training. A fall or crash could easily get in your head and cause unnecessary nerves for the remainder of the season.

The Virginia Beach Wheelmen had something to prove:
The Virginia Beach Wheelmen (VBW) really came together as a team this winter. We have also considered ourselves a team and not a club, but we are still amateurs with life that tends to get in the way. In the past we have had a few racers stay focus all year while others allow silly things like new babies, new homes, weddings, new jobs and opening new businesses to get in the way of cycling (I know crazy isn't it?) This year it looked like it was all coming together.

Mike Tamayo decided cold or not, there was nothing to keep him off the bike this season. He religiously followed a winter training program I provided to him.
John Gray got very motivated early. He took the CX season to take time off the bike. I coached him with weekly plans, strength and cross training. I have never seen him ride so well.
Tim Shockley opened up his Shockley Sweet Shoppe store at the beginning of the year. This actually allowed him to quit his landscaping job and concentrate solely on his business. This change in duel concentration has allowed him to get in a good solid month of training and the promise of more miles to come. Tim was quickly riding himself back into top form.
Zach Kyler has done his best to follow the training plan provided for him by me. He, however has battled the flu throughout the winter, especially last month. This illness has kept him from being consistent. He is a strong and motivated racer and it will not take him long to regain his form.
Jon Nisbet, currently our only Cat 2 racer, has been busy with work and a new baby. Anyone who saw him during CX season knows that it doesn't take much for him to regain form. Jon is a natural talent and will get hungry for racing again.
Then there is me. As the coach of the team I am just as concerned with everyone's form as I am with my own. I am exactly where I wanted to be. I put in a lot of time and feel I need to just work on race speed and I will be right there. That is what the early races are all about.

That is the VBW racing team. We worked hard this winter and feel like we deserve success.

CAT 3/4 Race
All of us with the exception of Jon Nisbet lined up for the 3/4 race. We had our new, bright green helmets which received a lot of attention. We were ready. The plan: Have at least two riders at all times at the front. Make sure nothing escaped without us. We would rotate the riders through taking turns to cover. More importantly though, test out our legs by making some attacks of our own. Use this as a training race and see what we could do. If at the end it was a group sprint, we would form a leadout and try to get at least 2 racers in the top 5.

Everything went as planned except that Zach ended up getting dropped. That was okay, he didn't quit and continued to use the race as another step to getting his fitness back. The team was all very pleased to see him stay in. Mike and John did the majority of the work with attacks and chases. At all times you could see the aggressiveness of the bright green Rudy Project helmets. Tim and I both did a fair amount of work covering attacks, making attacks and just creating an aggressive presence in the pack. With just a few laps to go we started to get into position to create a leadout. Coming up to the bell lap, Mike, John and myself were right near each other with Tim just behind us. Then the crash happened. It separated the field. Mike barely managed to stay up and it really took him out. John wasn't prepared at this time for a big sprint because he had just launched an attack. Tim was a little too far back and got separated. I kicked it, yelled to John to get on my wheel. He said "keep it going". In other words he couldn't get on. I couldn't slow if I had any chance on catching the lead. So I kept going hard and caught the group just before the second turn. As we rounded the turn I gunned it again to pass the line and I got on the wheel of the two riders creating the leadout. The big effort left very little in my legs for a sprint and I ended up with 4th place. Not bad, but we had hoped for better. The other guys finished well, at least no one went down with the crash.

CAT 1/2/3
All of the VBW racers with the exception of Zach decided to double up. What a great way to get speed in your legs. Jon Nisbet didn't race at all because he was battling an illness. The race started with the idea that we were going to sit in and survive. The problem is that we are bike racers and a lot of times finishing in a pack with a large break up the road is not surviving. Once again we did our fair share of work with Mike and John pulling the most weight for the team. A four man break did get up the road and there was a lot of effort to catch them for a while. As far as us, Tim was the first to go. He got some good speed in his legs and some great training but it was a little too much for the miles he had under his belt. I was the next one. This actually surprised me. At no point during this race did I think I was going to drop. With about 14 laps to go, just before turn number 2, my legs cramped. It was a sudden cramp, both legs, quads, hamstrings and calves. I actually almost lost control of my bike. Luckily I was on the outside and was able to go outside the cones and just go straight. I couldn't pedal and I couldn't sit down. It took a long time to go away. That had never happened that bad before. Mike was next. With fewer than 5 laps to go his legs started to cramp and he couldn't work them out. John did very well and stayed in for the final sprint.

I am very excited about how the team did. It makes for a very promising season.

Course Description: Flat, fast 0.5 mile loop with two 90-degree bends and two nice left sweepers. Bring the family, plenty of room for kids to play.

This Skills Clinic is open to any Junior Racer whose 2011 racing age is 10-18. It is open to all bike types including road, cyclocross, mountain or BMX. The skills will focus on road racing but the clinic will be held in a grass field. Road or cyclocross bikes with clipless pedals are encouraged but all types are welcomed (no handlebar attachments, including aero bars and mountain bike bar ends). Helmets are required. A USAC racing license is required. One-day and seasonal licenses will be available for purchase at registration. All USAC rules apply.

A Racing Tribute to 9/11

Three local firefighters, three Hampton Roads Cities, one team. Mike Tamayo of the Chesapeake Fire Department, John Gray of the Suffolk Fire Department and me, Joshua Goyet of the Virginia Beach Fire Department, all of the Virginia Beach Wheelmen, could not think of a better tribute to 9/11 victims and heroes then to race our bikes.

Also racing for the Virginia Beach Wheelmen on this day was Kevin Horvath, who as a City of Chesapeake mechanic, helps ensure public safety stays on the streets.

Why race our bikes on 9/11? BECAUSE WE CAN! The terrorist may have changed a lot 9 years ago, but they did not take our freedom. On this day, remember what happened, but remember what happened while having fun and exercising your freedoms.

That is what we wanted to do on this beautiful Saturday morning. I circled this race on the calendar when I saw it being held on September 11th. I trained for it, prepared for it, and asked my team to support me for the win.

Support is exactly what was given. Then again, what would you expect from a bunch of firefighters? So the Virginia Beach Wheelmen arrived in Hampton ready to race and to show mourning and support of 9/11 victims in our own way.

My race number, by special request was 343. That is number of firefighters that died 9 years ago.

On our calves were written the numbers "911" and "343":

On our thighs were written the words "Never Forget":

Our team logo draped front and back of our jerseys:

In our hearts and on our minds we carried the thoughts of that day. Where we were, what were we doing, how was this going to change our lives? Nine years later, there we were racing our bikes, hanging out with friends and enjoying life as an American. Sure things have changed, but thanks to our brave men and women in the armed forces, we are still free and we can still have a good time, even on September 11th.

Live every day like it is 9/12/01. Remember how we all came together and how many American Flags flew on that day and the months to follow.

For those that protect our freedom, thank you for letting me race my bike.

DESCRIPTION: A challenging time trial course starting just 2 blocks
outside of historic Downtown Smithfield during their annual Olden
Days Festival. The course travels over country roads through rolling terrain.
Course is open to traffic.

ALL JERSEYS MUST HAVE SLEEVES.

There will be NO restrictions regarding team make-up. USCF categories
and teams may mix to form a 2-man team.

Directions: The start will be near the YMCA at 259 James St, Smithfield, VA.
Use Google Maps or GPS the address. Parking will be available along
James St near the Riverview Community Park. Please don’t park in the
YMCA parking lot. They have, however, agreed to let you use their facilities.
The start of the race will be just a couple of blocks from the Smithfield Olden
Days Festival. Arrive early to ensure you can park near the course but feel
free to stay for the festival. Race held rain or shine.

Entry fee includes a $3.00 USAC Insurance fee. All entrants must have a current USCF
license or must purchase a One-day license at registration. Riders under 18 require a
parent’s signature to race. All USAC rules apply. Pre-registration is available on
BikeReg. Additional fees will apply. Helmets are required for all races; no sleeveless
jerseys.

Sub 1 hour ($100): This prize will go to the fastest team to break the one-hour barrier. Only one prize will be given. If more than one team breaks the hour then the prize goes to the fastest team. If no team breaks the hour the prize it is not given out. Last years fastest time was 1:00:35.

Merckx ($100): This prize is given to the fastest team using standard road equipment. No aero helmets, no aero bars, no disc wheels. Mass start legal equipment only (both members of the team).

DESCRIPTION: A classic “Main Street” Criterium course located just one block off of Main Street in Historic Downtown Smithfield (Home of the largest Ham Biscuit). The 0.75-mile course contains 4-corners and a small but steep hill. This is a must do race for all levels.

CATEGORY RULES Please read carefully!!: 1) No CAT 5 racers in the Master race. 2) In the Pro/1/2/3 race, BAR points are awarded to CAT 1/2 only. 3) Women1/2, 3, 40+ will be racing for one purse but will be competing for a separate set of BAR points in the respective category in which they register if the field is 25 or less, otherwise points will be given to the top 15 racers only. 4) Juniors will all race together but will be competing for separate purses and BAR Points. 5) Master’s will be racing for 1 purse and the top 15 finishers will receive BAR points in their respective age grade.

Smithfield HAMmer Fest 2-man TTT Results

It was an epic day in Smithfield Virginia. Last minute entry, Tyler Karnes and Elliot Craddock threatened to rival race favorites like Jeff Lawson and Tim Starky, as well as Gene Rutledge and Lucas Harville. Being a new course, unless these racers pre-rode it, every corner was going to be a suprise and every hill a challenge.

Elliot Craddock told me they were definitely in the hunt for the Young Rider Competition and they were going to shoot for the Sub 1-hour prize as well. This two-man team time trial was broken down into 4 categories: Men's, Women's, Coed and Merckx (no aero bars). Based on the make up of the two riders they could also qualify for some other prizes including: Masters 100+ (combined age 100 or greater), Young rider competition (combined age 40 or less) and Family (team members had to be related or married). Everyone was shooting for the Sub 1-hour bonus. The course was measured out at 27.7 miles. So sub 1-hour is flying.

The course included 10 turns and numerous rolling hills. Just enough to break the rhythm. It was probably too technical a course to make it a 4-man TTT, but the 2-man was perfect for the long straight sections and required good communication and fluid riding through the turns and hills.

I got the privalege of watching the riders approach the 200 meter mark near the top of a small bridge. After 27.7 miles of hard racing, the bridge did not appear small. Some teams broke up here, other riders looked like they were ready to quite, while others looked like professionals who do this stuff all the time.

Needless to say it was an experience. This type of event was not seen in this area in many years. The turnout was a little lower then expected, but I'm thinking that after everyone hears the fun and challenges they missed, next year will be bigger. This event also attracted new riders or crossovers from other sports. We issued 35 one-day lisences...is that normal for a time trial?

And yes, the Craddock/Karnes team missed the sub-hour bonus by 35 seconds. Does that mean the bonus should grow for next year? Also it should be noted that Lawson had a bad crash (no fault of the course or promoter...i just had to add that) and his race ended in the back of an ambulance. If anyone hears how he is doing please let me know. Heal quick.

*Don’t have a TT bike? The Merckx competition is the category for you. 2-man TTT on road bikes only with no aero bars. If it’s not legal in a mass start race it is not legal in this category.

A 2-man team time trial is an event in which 2 riders who leave together can pace and draft off each other only.

Finishing time is taken when the second rider crosses the finish line.

Other 2-Man TTT Competitions: You must sign up for the 2-Man TTT Men's, Women's, Coed, or Merckx categories AND any of the other competitions you qualify for.

Family Competition ($100): This prize will go to the top team that is comprised of family members. Father/son, siblings, husband/wife, etc…

Masters 100+($100): This prize will go to the top team whose riders have a combined age of 100 or more.

Young Team Competition ($100): This prize will go to the fastest team whose combined age is 40 or less.

Directions: The start will be near the YMCA at 259 James St, Smithfield, VA. Use Google Maps or GPS the address. Parking will be available along James St near the Riverview Community Park. Please don’t park in the YMCA parking lot. They have, however, agreed to let you use their facilities. The start of the race will be just a couple of blocks from the Smithfield Olden Days Festival. Arrive early to ensure you can park near the course but feel free to stay for the festival.

All USCF rules apply. Entry Fees include $3.00 per racer USCF insurance fee. All entrants must have a current USCF license or MUST purchase a One-Day License at registration. Riders under 18 require a parent’s signature to race. Helmets are required for all races. There will be NO restrictions regarding team make-up. USCF categories and teams may mix to form a 2-man team.

Registration is available at Bikereg.com only. There will be NO Bikereg fees. The Virginia Beach Wheelmen will pay all Bikereg fees.

Course Description: A challenging time trial course through country roads and rolling terrain with a lot of false flats.
